Virtual learning doesn’t have to mean abandoning science! In fact, hands-on science is a great way to get students engaged and excited. Lessons and videos below are original or curated. Linked activities use minimal supplies or supplies found in nearly every household. Check back as we build up a database.
Grade level placements are based on NGSS standards.

Family Science from Learning in Places. Multiple lessons focusing on walks and science you can do around your neighborhood. Materials are available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.
Author Read Outloud: Abby Invents Unbreakable Crayons, picture book. Follow Abby as she observes and tests to create a new invention. Author is biochemical engineer, Dr. Arlyne Simon.
5th Grade

ACTIVITY: Condensation. All students need is a cup, water, ice and a timer. This can be part of a broader lesson about the water cycle or used for Matter and Its Interactions to show how water exists as a gas in air.
4th Grade
4-LS1-2
ACTIVITIES: Many of the activities in “Brain and Body Communication” work well for virtual learning. There is also an extensive background for teachers.

VIDEO: Embedded in There’s a New World’s Blackest Black from SmartNews. A fantastic example of what happens when an object absorbs almost all light and reflects very little!

VIDEO: Amazing Animal Groups (4:24) from Science for Kid. This video goes over names for different groups in animals, in doing so introduces students to the many types of animals that travel is groups. Focus less on the vocab and more on the examples.

VIDEO: Dig In To Paleontology from SciShow Kids (4:11). This is a nice introduction to fossils (and Paleontology) and discuss a variety of fossils (not just dinosaurs). It has some fun facts kids will enjoy.
VIDEO: How Do Dinosaur Fossils Form? (3:49) from the Natural History Museum. This video has some nice simulations showing what happened ot allow (dinosaur) fossils to be preserved. Some parts of the video are advanced.
VIDEO: Dinosaurs for Kids (9:13) from Clarendon Learning. This is a longer video but has some nice segments showing Paleontologists in the field, and has some fun facts about Dinosaurs. It is at a good level for 3rd graders. It focuses on Dinosaurs, so remind students there are fossils of lots of plants and animals!

SHORT VIDEO: How geologists collect lava samples from volcanoes - A video that will “wow” students that shows a geologist collecting fresh lava. Also point out to students this is someone’s job to collect lava!

ARTICLE: Why did scientists paint eyes on hundreds of cattle butts? To save lives, study says from Miami Herald. Compare this potential solution to keep livestock safe from predators to “fake eyes” or eye spot camouflage. (Learn more here, here, and here. Students will need some prerequisite knowledge)

ARTICLE: See the World’s Youngest Gorilla Being Hugged by Mom Hours after Being Born from Good News Network. A short article with nice pictures of a mother gorilla cradling her newborn. Ask students to compare the features of the mom and baby.
