JOEL BARKAN
SCIENCE OUTREACH AND CONSERVATION
As a research and restoration manager, Joel Barkan ensures that authentic science research is integrated into Ocean Discovery Institute (ODI) programs. Ocean Discovery Institute is an organization in San Diego dedicated to empowering students in the surrounding City Heights community through the teaching of ocean science.
Mr. Barkan exposes students to relevant science through intensive research experiences. His activities include examining how acidic sea water impacts algae and teaching (and warning!) us about the harmful effects of ocean acidification.
He also manages the restoration of City Heights’ urban canyons into safe, vibrant environments within the community.
His card was developed by CAPTS and Hoover High student Zaira L.
