DR. VICTORIA HERRMANN
CLIMATE RESEARCHER
IF/THEN Series
Dr. Victoria Herrmann is a climate change researcher, college professor, and the director of a nonprofit organization, The Arctic Institute. She works with local leaders across the Arctic, United States, and US Territories to find ways to keep families, communities, and cultures safe from big changes like sea level rise, storms, and melting ice.
Dr. Herrmann also focuses on communicating information about climate change to the general public. She writes articles and appears in other media to help promote understanding about the challenges we face from a warming climate - and what solutions we might undertake. Dr. Herrmann speaks out against “doomsday” narratives pervasive in the media. She says we should report on “the climate change heroes who are doing everything they can” and see the “strength in communities” in the face of environmental changes.
Dr. Herrmann has multiple passions. She wants you to know she loves art and visiting museums; she even majored in Art History in college! She says “If you are choosing between a love of art and science - choose both!”
Educational Pathway: Dr. Herrmann studied international affairs in college, focusing on climate change policy. She studied geography for for my PhD. Geography is the study of how we humans have interacted and impacted the environment.
