Dr. Sarah Kaiser
Expert in Quantum Computing

Dr. Kaiser works as a research engineer and studies and writes on a variety of topics including quantum computing!

Dr. Kaiser writes: “I especially love working with light, especially lasers and LEDs. It is so much fun building and lining up lasers in the lab. To me, playing in the lab with lasers feels like 3D connect the dots that can set things on fire! I use these lasers to help us understand the smallest parts of our world, and make it more secure.

STEM STAR Interview

What was your favorite subject in K-5 or K-12?
Math

Did you have a favorite teacher growing up?
I had so many amazing teachers growing up, but I had a science teacher in 6th grade who had some pets in the classroom like a snake, tarantulas, and ferrets which was really fun.

Who inspired your growing up?
I always loved Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus and Bill Nye the Science Guy. They both were really good at finding ways to learn by experimentation. I still learn best by finding ways to be hands-on, experiment, and maybe break a few things :)

Do you have pets or a favorite animal?
I love dogs, and grew up with sweeties named Mackie and Kirby. Dogs are great because they always are there to cuddle on the couch or be good company on a walk.

What is your favorite non-work activity, hobby or way to relax?
Making things! You can usually hanging out at a makerspace and using the laser cutter. Other than that, I like kayaking, lifting weights and playing board games with my friends.

What is the weather like where you live? Is there anything interesting about it?
Seattle has a reputation of being rainy and gloomy, but it actually gets plenty of sun and it has tons of outdoor activities to enjoy. I love going kayaking in the really blue lakes up in the mountains.

Did you have a favorite game or song as a child?
I really enjoyed playing simulation games like Sim City or Zoo Tycoon. I could plan everything and design everything just the way I wanted.

Is there anything interesting you’d like us to share?
I identify as a bisexual woman and do a lot of community development in underrepresented disciplines. I am passionate about breaking down barriers to teaching people about technical topics. My PhD is in Quantum computing and I am co-writing a book with my partner to teach people how to develop software for quantum computers.
