Dr. Lisa White is fossil expert! Paleontologists are scientists who learn about the history of Earth through the study of fossils. Dr. White can also be called a geologist. Geologists study the Earth.

Dr. White works at the University of California Museum of Paleontology. There she creates lesson plans for teachers and students so they can teach and learn about paleontology. She also organizes, describes, and photographs fossil collections to share with other scientists.

Dr. White describes her educational pathway: “I studied geology as an undergraduate but my first major in college was photography. After I discovered I liked geology, I took advantage of summer internship opportunities to learn more about the profession. I received encouragement to go to graduate school and I focused on paleontology while in graduate school.”

She says: “There are many pathways to becoming a scientist and my field, paleontology, crosses many disciplines of science. It's best to learn a variety of subjects to discover what you enjoy the most!”
