DR. KATY CROFF BELL
DEEP SEA EXPLORER
IF/THEN Series
Dr. Bell is a deep sea explorer who uses technology to explore the depths of the ocean. Did you know it’s easier to measure the surface of Mars than the ocean floor? Dr. Bell learns more about the sea floor using deep-sea robots which can map the floor, explore shipwreaks, underwater volcanoes, deep-sea life, and more!
Previously, as Chief Scientist of the Nautilus Exploration Program, she and her team sent out live videos from the deep sea robots so anyone could tune in to see live video of the bottom of the ocean!
Dr. Bell’s mission is not only to find new and better ways to explore the ocean, but also to make deep-sea exploration more accessible to all. To achieve these goals, she founded Ocean Discovery League to develop “faster, cheaper, and more accessible ways to explore the deep ocean, and training a diverse team to lead those global efforts.”
Educational Pathway: Dr. Bell studied ocean engineering in college, received her masters in maritime archaeology, and her PhD in geological oceanography.
