DR. JOY BALLS-BERRY
PSYCHIATRIC EPIDEMIOLOGIST
Dr. Balls-Berry Ph.D. is a psychiatric epidemiologist and health educator. A psychiatric epidemiologist is a type of scientist that studies the societal causes behind mental disorders. Her work centers on building research partnerships with scientists, patients, and communities. Dr. Balls-Berry established the Minority Women in Research Network (MWRN) in 2011 to increase opportunities for women in health-related research. She advocates the importance of cultural competence in reaching underrepresented groups in research.
She also shared her story of living with dyslexia and handling personal challenges as a TEDx Talk. She says: “I live everyday with dyslexia, it is my superpower.”
