DR. JOSLYNN LEE
BIOCHEMIST
Dr. Joslynn Lee is an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Fort Lewis College. She likes to “engage students to make connections to chemistry with real-world relevance.”
Her research lab asks questions about how microbes, which are tiny organisms, affect our daily lives. Dr. Lee studies waterways and food systems to better understand what 1. microbes are metabolizing (i.e. digesting or breaking down), 2. what microbes are think about eating 3. What microbes are producing, and what microbes are secreting. Dr. Lee identifies microbes using DNA sequencing.
She trains and mentors students who are historically underrepresented in the STEM fields. She says: “As a first-generation Indigenous scientist, I hope to encourage more folks to get into science. There are many spaces to represent a voice for our people in chemistry and genomics.”
