DR. FLOSSIE WONG-STAAL
VIROLOGIST
STEM Superheroes™ Series
Dr. Wong-Staal was the first to clone the HIV virus, in1985, and her work helped determine that HIV causes AIDS and supported the development of blood tests for the virus. She helped save lives.
Later in her career Dr. Wong-Staal became a leader at the company iTherX Pharmaceuticals (originally Immusol) where she led efforts to help develop drugs to treat hepatitis C, a liver infection caused by a virus.
In 2020, Dr Wong-Staal passed away.

Q: What was your favorite subject in K-12?
A: Biology
Q: Did you have a favorite teacher growing up? Why were they your favorite?A: Yes, because he was humorous, which made a lot of his teaching easier to remember.
Q: Who inspired your growing up? Why?A: My mother, because she was intelligent, strong and decisive. Even though she did not go to college, she was committed to provide the best education for her children.
Q: Do you have children or grandchildren?
A: I am close to my four grandchildren. It is wonderful to watch their joy in learning new things.
Q: Do you have pets or a favorite animal? What is something you like about being a pet-owner or your favorite animal?
A: I have dogs. It is a very special bond of mutual affection between pet and owner.
Q: What is your favorite non-work activity, hobby or way to relax?
A: Dancing
Q: What is the weather like where you live? Is there anything interesting about it?
A: San Diego has the best weather in the country. It is never too hot or too cold.
