Amber Whatley is a lighting designer. She uses lights to create the look and atmosphere for plays, musicals, operas, concerts, tours, television shows, movies, art installations and more!
Ms. Whatley works with a team of people including, but not limited to a director, choreographer, set designer, costume designer, and sound designer to make a production come together.
Ms. Whatley is also an educator. She teaches students about designing with lights, how to understand the science of light with measuring the visible wavelengths in relation to the human eye, and how to utilize color theory to maximize designs on stage. She shares “I created a program called Blackout that brings lighting design and technology to BIPOC youth and under supported school districts/communities that don't have performing arts programs in their schools. I struggled and felt like I was not good enough early in my career because I didn't have those educational skills the other students got from their primary educations. Because of Blackout no student ever has to struggle or feel that way again.”
