Lawrey is trained as an Electrical Engineer. Electrical engineers may work on a diverse range of technologies, like the design of household appliances, lighting of buildings, electrical power stations, satellite communications, circuits smart phones, and much more.
Lawrey wants you to know, “It’s okay to feel uncomfortable and try things you’ve never done before - it might turn out that you actually like it. Be open to learning new skills. Engineers are just problem solvers. Solutions are needed for problems every day. There’s NO LIMIT to what Engineers can do! Give it a try!”
Lawrey also shared her challenges: “There are instances of isolation, overt bias, and stereotyping. I definitely dealt with people assuming that I don’t know what I’m talking about because I’m a woman and not a man - then combine that with the fact that I am black, and I look different than probably most of the people that are in my office. But I remained myself and persisted!
Educational Pathway: Lawrey obtained a her master’s degree in Public Administration and Policy and studied electrical engineering in college.
